Thomas Mejtoft: Promotion picture

With more than two decades of experience spanning research, teaching, executive training and consultancy, I work at the intersection of information technology, design, and business. I hold dual MSc degrees in Engineering Physics and Business and a PhD in Media Technology. My expertise covers the full spectrum of product and service innovation, human-centered design processes, interaction technology, interaction design, business-model innovation, marketing strategy, and value-creation in the face of technological change. A commitment to rigorous quality underpins everything I do — my research, teaching, and educational leadership have each been recognized with awards for excellence.

Biography

I am an Associate Professor of Media Technology at Umeå University, Sweden, and appointed as distinguished teacher. I have been a Visiting Associate Professor at the School of Computer Science and Engineering at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and a lecturer and visiting professor at the School of Business and Law at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia.
I hold dual MSc degrees in Engineering Physics and Business from Umeå University, and a PhD in Media Technology from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm. My research and teaching interests include not only media technology, design processes, interaction technology, interaction design, and students’ learning, but also digitalization, value creation, concurrent sourcing, marketing issues, and technological changes connected to the media and the media industry. My work has been published in e.g., Journal of Strategic Marketing, Industrial Marketing Management, and International Journal of Information and Learning Technology, and has been presented at numerous international conferences within many different disciplines.
For my research, I have received best paper awards at the ANZMAC conference and at the CHI conference.
Between 2011-2023, I was the director of the highly appreciated and awarded five-year integrated Master of Science in engineering study program in Interaction Technology and Design at Umeå University.
I was the recipient of the Faculty of Science and Technology’s Pedagogical Prize at Umeå University in 2016 for my efforts to inspire students and teachers to take part in creating high quality education. In 2023, as part of the International Entrepreneurial Partnership Program Team, I received the Vice-Chancellor’s Staff Excellence Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning at Edith Cowan University.

Employed as a lecturer at the School of Business and Law on the unit Current Issues in Marketing with focus on Business Model Innovation and Development in during two months in fall 2016. Invited as Visiting Scholar and Visiting Professor during 2017, 2018, 2022, and 2024. Since 2017, I have a collaborative project and I am involved in some regular teaching at ECU during these courses. In December 2024 I took part of the School of Business and Law’s International Partnership Symposium in Athens, Greece.

2006–Present: Independent Consultant

2018, 2019: Nanyang Technological University (NTU)
Visiting Associate Professor and STINT Teaching Sabbatical Fellow at the School of Computer Science and Engineering, NTU, Singapore, during first semester (August-December) of academic year 2018/2019. Main focus was teaching and research within Computer Science, Physics, and Human-Computer Interaction.
Invited by NTU as Visiting Scholar during November-December 2019 to work with PhD students and research at the Computational Intelligence Lab.

2003–2009: STFI-Packforsk (currently: RISE Innventia)
Lecturer, workshop coordinator and supervisor at professional training courses and academic courses in cooperation with the Mid Sweden University. Supervisor for five academic theses.
STFI-Packforsk was a Swedish research institute with focus on paper, packaging and print located (mainly) in Stockholm, Sweden. This research institute is now a part of RISE.
